Our story

Rooted in the Land That Changed Everything

In 2023, Minnesota passed historic legislation, the 23rd state to allow for adult use of cannabis — to commemorate, we created our brand — 23rd State. The brand is deeply rooted in equitable and sustainable practices — working to ensure a more diverse and just future for those affected most by cannabis prohibition.

Around the same time, Leah received a life-changing diagnosis: MS. Rather than letting it define her, she turned to cannabis as part of her treatment — and the results were undeniable. What started as a personal discovery quickly became a mission to share those benefits with others.

Importantly, the idea that joy is just as much a part of wellness is what motivates the team each and every day!

Cannabis Beverage History

While not an exact replication, our initial drink formula has origins from a century ago. Maltos-Cannabis was a Swedish hemp seed-based malt beverage “food remedy” produced between 1892 and 1912. The product contained malt and hemp seed fatty extract. This unique beverage was widely available in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway, and was even advertised in American publications. Maltos-Cannabis was marketed as a nutrient and sedative, and was believed to have health benefits.
