The margarita is America's most-ordered cocktail, which means it's also America's most-butchered mocktail. Skip the tequila without replacing what it does, and you're drinking sweetened lime juice from a salted glass.
Here's how to build a non-alcoholic margarita that holds up to the original — and how the cannabis margarita, made with a measured low-dose THC addition, restores the one thing no syrup can: the lift.
What tequila actually does in a margarita
Break the classic 2-1-1 spec down by function:
- Tequila brings vegetal, peppery agave flavor, a warm burn, and the proof
- Orange liqueur brings bittersweet citrus depth and body
- Lime brings the acid spine
- Salt amplifies everything and tames the bitterness
Notice that tequila does three jobs — flavor, texture (burn), and effect. Most NA margaritas replace zero of them. A good one replaces all three.
Building the zero-proof margarita
1. Replace the agave flavor. A dedicated NA agave spirit (Trejo's Spirits Zero, used in our house recipe, is a strong one) restores the vegetal-peppery backbone. No NA spirit on hand? A bar spoon of good agave nectar plus a drop of jalapeño brine gets you surprisingly close.
2. Replace the burn. Heat reads as "spirit" to your palate. A whisper of fresh chile — a jalapeño coin muddled in, or a spiced rim — gives the finish the bite that flat mocktails lack. (If you love that direction, our Spicy Jalapeño Piña Colada leans all the way in.)
3. Keep the citrus real. Fresh lime, always. Bottled lime is where mocktails go to die. A splash of orange juice plus a pinch of orange zest stands in for the liqueur.
4. Salt like you mean it. Half-rim with flaky salt so every other sip alternates.
The cannabis margarita: giving the classic its kick back
Flavor solved, one gap remains — the reason a margarita is a margarita and not an agua fresca. That's where the THC version comes in.
Our Canna-Rita recipe builds the full zero-proof spec with Trejo's Spirits Zero, fresh lime, and SHAKE — our flavorless, infused edible glitter drops at roughly 1mg hemp-derived THC per dropper. Three droppers gives the drink a gentle, social ~3mg lift; it shimmers, it lands softly, and the agave-lime flavor stays untouched.
Why measured drops beat "cannabis cocktails" made with infused syrups: the dose is visible. You count droppers instead of guessing how the syrup settled. Low doses are the sweet spot for social drinks — the largest real-world THC beverage dataset shows most of the enjoyment lives at low milligrams, with steep diminishing returns (and rising regret) above them.
And unlike a second tequila round, a THC margarita's arc is knowable: sparkling and low-dose formats kick in within minutes for most real-world drinkers, not the hour of a brownie — one more reason so many people are swapping their usual drink for a cannabis version.
The build
Full measurements in the Canna-Rita recipe; the skeleton:
- Salt half the rim of a rocks glass; fill with ice
- Shake NA agave spirit, fresh lime, orange juice, and agave nectar hard with ice
- Add 1–3 droppers of SHAKE to the shaker
- Strain over fresh ice; lime wheel; watch it shimmer
Batching for taco night: multiply everything except the SHAKE by your guest count, pitcher it, and let each guest add their own drops — zero-proof by default, personalized by choice.
Non-alcoholic margarita FAQ
What's the best tequila substitute in a margarita? A purpose-built NA agave spirit. Second best: agave nectar for flavor plus a touch of chile for the burn tequila would have supplied.
Does a cannabis margarita taste like weed? Not this one — SHAKE is formulated flavorless. The drink tastes like a margarita; the drops change how it lands, not how it tastes.
How many mg of THC should go in a margarita? Start at 1–3mg (1–3 droppers) if you're newer to THC drinks; 5mg is a confident-but-social pour. Wait for the first to land before building a second.
Is a THC margarita legal? SHAKE is hemp-derived and Farm Bill-compliant with batch COAs, but state rules differ — the state-by-state legality and shipping guide has the current map.
Frozen or on the rocks? The spec above is rocks. For frozen, blend the same build with a cup of ice — or go straight to our frozen lineup, starting with the Watermelon Pink Cooler.
The margarita never needed the hangover — just the lift. Shake up the Canna-Rita this week, and keep an eye out for the 23rd State recipe book, coming soon.
